Tues, Aug 19 - Stafford Speedway - 10th

The Rained out Race started with a couple of yellow laps which everybody took advantage of to change tires. The
Sunoco Race Fuels, Mopar Performance #14 NASCAR Modified Dodge came out in the midle of the pack and worked his way up to fifth and was going for fourth when the something in the right front suspension broke putting Eric back a few spots. He went into the pits and the team determined that they couldn't fix it and it would not cause Eric to crash so they told him to go ride it out. Eric went back out and finished 10th.

Thurs, August 14 - Thompson Speedway - NASCAR MODIFIED TOUR -19th
Even with a 19th place finsih the team was happy that the car finsihed and nothing broke at least changing some of the luck the
Sunoco Race Fuels, Mopar Performance #14 NASCAR Modified Dodge has been having. Eric qualified the car in the 4th position so there was no doubt that the car was fast. It was the way the cautions fell that Eric could not get in to get make an adjustment on a "wicked loose" race car.

Eric time trailed 21st and is excited about his chances of getting to the front for the race. The race started out with Eric running by himself. Nothing too exciting. With the three MOPAR Motors in for refreshing they went to the old reliable backup that does not have the pop of the MOPAR. Eric brought the MOPAR Sunoco Race Fuels Dodge home for a 15th place finish. Moving up in the standings from 9th place to 7th.

Sat, June 21 - Seekeonk Speedway - NASCAR MODIFIED TOUR
- RAIN OUT - Rescheduled for Oct 12

Sat, June 14- Lake Erie Speedway -
NASCAR MODIFIED TOUR - 150 Laps
- 3rd
One driver may have figured out that when the calendar turns to the month of June, good things might happen. Todd Szegedy scored his first Featherlite Modified Series, NASCAR Touring victory one year ago and Saturday night at a new venue for the Series, the Ridgefield, Conn. driver repeated the scene with a convincing win in the Don Barker owned, Haynes Materials sponsored Ford Mustang at Lake Erie Speedway in North East, Pa. A side-by-side run with Eric Beers on a restart, Szegedy took the lead on lap sixty, survived three more cautions and never looked back on his way to the winners circle in the inaugural Lake Erie Featherlite Modified Series, NASCAR Touring 150. John Blewett III followed for second with Eric Beers, Chuck Hossfeld and Rick Fuller the top five.
Jamie Tomaino of Howell, N.J. in the Perth Amboy Spring Chevrolet brought the thirty- car field around the 3/8-mile oval for the green flag with Beers of Northampton, Pa. in the Mopar Performance Dodge on the outside. Rookie Donny Lia set fast time to earn his career first Bud Pole Award and now also holds the Series track record at Lake Erie with his 14.015 qualifying lap. Lia started his Huntington Honda Chevrolet tenth after the redraw. Tomaino, with a strong edge, led the opening lap only to be reeled in for the first caution involving Tony Hirschman in the Kamco Supply Chevrolet who spun in turns three and four collecting up Ted Christopher. The wide racing surface allowed the field to scatter harmlessly behind the incident but contact with the Mystique Motorsports Chevrolet sent Hirschman to the pits in the infield while Christopher exited the speedway for more extensive repairs.

On the double file restart, Beers with a strong run used the outside groove passing Tomaino to become the second leader of the night on lap eight. A melee in turn two involving at least five cars including Rob Summers, Tommy Cloce, Ryan Holland, Carl Pasteryak and Hirschman set up another double file restart on lap 43. While Beers led the field, Szegedy moved under Blewett for second with Jerry Marquis fourth and Hossfeld fifth.

A long night for Hirschman, a right front flat brought out the next yellow sending the Northampton, Pa. driver to the infield for a new Hoosier. And while Hirschman joined the lap sixty restart, seven circuits later, off the pace, Hirschman retired for the night with terminal problems, overheating the official listed reason out.

Meanwhile, Szegedy lined up on the outside of Beers for the restart and wheel-to-wheel, Szegedy held on gaining the edge capturing the lead on lap 60. Marquis followed, passing Beers in turns one and two for second with Beers falling in single file for third, Blewett fourth and Hossfeld fifth.

"Basically I knew where I wanted to be and I watched where everybody was on the restarts, they were pretty consistent," said Szegedy explaining about what turned out to be the winning pass. "I knew exactly where Eric was going to restart and I started exactly identical to him, I just power shifted like when I used to drag race my Mustang back home. I knew if I got a good shift, I could get a good jump on him. He ran me awesome. Everybody I passed and everybody I was around today ran me clean, I don't think I even got a scratch on the car."

"On that restart where Todd got us, I thought we'd be good enough to turn and beat him off the corner," said Beers. "The left front shook and chattered for like ten laps, that's how he got me, then Jerry got me. Then it went away. From then on, I didn't let the front tires cool at all, I think maybe I didn't have that left front hot enough for the restart, that's how we ended up loosing the lead." Beers added shrugging his shoulders a bit, "it won't happen again."

After starting eleventh in the Car Salon, Inc., Roby's Propane Chevrolet, Jerry Marquis of Broad Brook, Conn. appeared to be the biggest threat to Szegedy's lead after moving into second. But on a restart with just over fifty to go, a broken torque arm forced Marquis to the infield, his night done. Inheriting the second spot, Blewett in the Curt Chase owned Mastrobattisto Contractors sponsored Pontiac remained consistent holding onto the position right up to the checkered flag of the Lake Erie 150.

The eighth and final caution came on lap 132 when Ryan Holland spun in turns one and two. The field, led by Szegedy lined up single file for the last green flag run of the night, the top five, Szegedy, Blewett, Beers, Hossfeld and Fuller holding on in that order at the stripe.

Collecting his career first Featherlite Modified Series, NASCAR Touring podium finish, Eric Beers has teamed up with car owner Billy 'Bear' Calliciho this year and it is most likely not the last time we'll see him there. "It was great, I'm happy for the team," said Beers. "I think we're going to get better as the year goes, I don't see us going backwards one step. From here on, it's forward. We've qualified in the top five the last three races and we've going to try to make it a habit to finish in the top five in more races. The first couple of races we were communicating pretty well. But now, we know our tendencies a little bit better, like when I tell him (Bear) it's a little bit loose, he knows what to do, we're really starting to gel, I think the next couple of weeks, we're really going to be on."

Eric and the Sunoco Race FUels, Mopar Performance #14 Bear Motorpsorts NASCAR Modified went out 2nd last to qualify and put up the 4th fastest time. Eric started the race and was a little loose. The pit strategy was to stay out long enough to have the freshest tires at the end. Eric came in with about 50 to go. When they went back to green there were no more cautions so Eric burned up the tires getting back to the front because the tires never had a chance to cure. Eric brought the car home into one piece ready for the next race 7th place in points.

Sun, May 25- -Tioga Speedway - Sunco Race of Champions Tour

Sunoco Race of Champions Modified Driver Eric Beers and crew took the ride to the freshly paved 1/2 mile track to drive in the Zacharias owned NASCAR Modified. Eric and the crew had the car going pretty good in practice as they worked hard to get the car going by changing shocks and springs and making mechanical adjustments. Eric picked a good starting position in his heat. He was scheduled to go off second which was good because they were taking four from each and the top three would redraw for starting postion. As the cars were going into three for the one to go sign from the flagman Eric suddenly stopped and was hit in the rear by another car. It turns out that the Rack sieze up and Eric lost his steering. The crew and driver were relegated to spectators for the evening.

Sun, May 18 - 6:00 PM - Mahoning Speedway - Sunoco Race of Champions Tour- 13th
WHAT A HEART BREAKER. This was Eric's ran to lose. The former track champion had the lead and was holding off all charges especially from fellow NASCAR Modified Tour competitor Ted Christopher. Eric started the Horwith Racing, Sunoco Race Fuels, Gregory's Steakhouse #19 in second and bided his time to make the move for the lead. When Eric Had the lead no one could touch him. With four laps to go Eric had a tire go flat and had to pull off and had the lead taken away. A real heartbreaker for the team and the driver looking for his first win of the season. He may not be in victory lane tonight but everyone there knows Eric Beers was there and was heading down to Gregory's Steakhouse with the team and prepare for the next race.

Northampton. PA Driver Eric Beers driving at his hometrack had the Bear Motorpsorts Sunoco Race Fuels, Mopar Performance #14 NASCAR Modified second fastest in pracetic and backed that up with a second place qualifying position. Eric ran the begining of the race in the top five until the team decided to pit on the first caution on lap 25. They also had to come back in a little later as the car was too loose and the Motor was not as strong as it was in practice. Eric could drive by anyone in the coreners but as he got back in the gas it was not strong enough to get back into the top position. Eric missed several wrecks to bring the car home in 9th and put himself back in the 7th points position.

ERIC BEERS IS HEADING TO RACEFEST AND GREGORY'S STEAKHOUSE DURING THE NAZARETH RACE WEEKEND

Northampton, PA. . . . . .Northampton, PA's, NASCAR SUNOCO RACE FUELS Modified Driver Eric Beers will join the Race Fest Activities the City of Bethlehem and Nazareth Speedway have put together for the first ever Bethlehem RaceFest on Friday, May 16th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Bethlehem City Hall on East Church Street. The event is being held as a precursor for the great racing action scheduled at Nazareth Speedway May 17-18, with the NASCAR Busch Series taking center stage in the Goulds Pumps ITT Industries 200 and the NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series battling it out for the Serivce Electric 100 title.

Eric Beers will slo be representing Gregory's Steakhouse at eh race fest. Eric will have menus and promotional items to giveaway to the the fans attending. This is in addition to the the Eric Bers autograph cards, stickers and magnets. Gregory's Steakhouse will also be an associtate sponsor for the Sunoc Race of Champions Modified Tour Race Sunday night at Mahonign Valley Speedbowl.

Bethlehem RaceFest will feature show cars from both the NASCAR Busch Series and the ERIC BEERS Sunoco Race Fuels NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series Race car, along with autograph sessions with Sunoco Race Fuels Driver Eric Beers and fellow Featherlite Modified drivers Jamie Tomano, Jimmy Brodrick. NASCAR Busch Series drivers are also expected to participate in the event's autograph session, scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

"Events at Nazareth Speedway create significant tourism activity in the City of Bethlehem," said City of Bethlehem Mayor James Delgrosso. "Race fans stay in our hotels, enjoy dining in our restaurants and do lots of shopping on both sides of the river. The City of Bethlehem is happy to support RaceFest in celebration of Nazareth Speedway's contribution as a major Lehigh Valley attraction."

Among the other sights at RaceFest will be a NASCAR Busch Series team hauler and the official 2004 Nazareth Speedway Pontiac Grand Prix Pace Car. Fans will also get a preview of the Indy cars heading to Nazareth in August for the Firestone Indy 225 Indy Racing League IndyCar Series event, with the appearance of Robby Buhl's No. 24 Purex/Aventis/Dreyer & Reinbold Racing car. The event is rounded out with a coloring contest, sponsored by the City of Bethlehem, a raffle for hospitality tickets to the Goulds Pumps ITT Industries 200 and plenty of food vendors to satisfy your appetite!

Coming off a disappointing 25th place finish at the NASCAR Tour Event at Waterford Speedbowl that saw Eric get hit on Lap 4 as he was passing two cars underneath on the Backstretch the team is coming into their "hometrack" race with great expectations. Eric, driving the Mopar Performance, Bear Motorsports #14 has shown so far early in the season that the team has all the components to make a charge at winning races and contending for the NASCAR MODIFIED TOUR title. There are still plenty of sponsorship and marketing partnership available through Eric Beers and his race teams. Eric will also be competing at Mahoning Valley Speedway on Sunday night following the Nazareth Event in the Horwith Racing #19 for the Sunoco Race of Champions Tour Event.

Sat, May 10 - Waterford Speedbowl, Waterford, CT -NASCAR MODIFIED Tour -25th
Northampton, PA. . . NASCAR Modified Driver Eric Beers and the Bear Motorsports were in the top ten in practice all day which is not bad because this is the first time that Eric had seen Waterford SPeedbowl. When it came time to go out for Time one of the crew noticed that the left front and the left rear tires were on the wrong spots. Eric who was scheduled to go out 14th in time went out 17th as the crew changed the tire position. NASCAR penelized Eric on lap of time trials. Eric qualified 14th fastest on his first and only lap of time. Almost every other competitor picked up alot of time on their second lap, but Eric did not have this luxury which is important because of the way the race started. On lap 4 Eric was following Mike Stefanik under Jamie Tomaino and Bo Gunning on the back stretch. Those two got together and came down in front of Eric sending him on top of Jamie. Repairs in the pits put Eric down 40 laps relegating Eric to 25th but he got valuable track time for the Septemeber Race.

Sat, May 3rd - Mahoning Valley Speedway
-7th
Eric and the Horwith Racing Horwith Racing Team went to Mahoning as a tune up for the upcoming RoC Event. Eric had old tires on in the heat. THe team thought they would redraw the the top five finishers in teh 3 heats but they went straight up relegating Eric to a 14th place starting position. Eric was the only car making a move to the front but eventually ran out of time and laps as he had to avoid several big wrecks to be stay in the 7th finisheing position.

April 26 - Stafford Speedway, Stafford, NJ - NASCAR Featherlite Modified Tour - 7th
N
orthampton, PA NASCAR Modified Driver Eric Beers finished the NASCAR Modified Tour event in the 12th position but that was no indication of the opportunity he had to win his first Tour Event. All of Saturday's Practice and Time Trials were rescheduled to make a one-day Show on Sunday. The car was good in practice and Eric Time Trialed the #14 Sunoco Race Fuels, Mopar Performace NASCAR Modified in 13th Position.
The race was uneventful for the first 50 laps until Eric had to make several pit stops to cut out some sheet metal on the snout to let more air flow in. Eric then ran in the middle for the next 30 laps until the team decided to pit for tires and fuel for the 200-lap event. This strategy got Eric back towards the front and was running second on lap 125. Eric actually went on to lead laps 135 and 136 then dropped back to second. On lap 156 during a caution the car came to a halt in turn four. Initial reports were that he
ran out of gas, but it turns out the fuel pick up device must has moved up the wall and was not able to pick up the available fuel unless it was at a higher level. So the crew gave Eric some more gas and put him back on his way. Eric picked his way through the field to come home 12th with the knowledge that he could have won that race. Eric now sits 7th in points after 2 NASCAR Modified Tour events.

APRIL 12-13 THOMPSON SPEEDWAY -NASCAR MODIFIED TOUR - 8th
After the event was rescheduled from the week before because of a Spring Snow Storm in the Northeast the Icebreaker started the 2003 NASCAR Modified Season. The weekend went well for Eric as he began his term as the driver of the Sunoco NASCAR Modified #14 for Noted Modified owner Billy "Bear" Calicchio. Eric took to the track for practice and got out there 4 times and the car improved each time they went out and came in to make adjustments.
43 Cars took time and Eric was 6th fastest and then proceeded to pick the 8th starting spot in the redraw. The race started with a big wreck behind Eric in turn 3. The first 13 laps had 3 green laps and the first 35 had 13 green laps. From there things settled down and the race went green for long stretches. Eric ran 5th - 6th - 7th and 8th during this time going up as high as going for third place and going back as far as 12th once when he had to slow down to avoid a spin on the font stretch. On lap 99 Eric was running 5th when the 2nd and 3rd place runners got together and sent Nevin George into the wall in turn two. Eric had to do a stop spin to avoid Nevin. From there Eric went into the pits and changed three tires. He started in the rear of the field and worked his way through to finished a respectable 8th place the first time in this car and working with a new crew.

RACING SEASON PRELUDE STORY by Polly Reid

Gearing up for the first Featherlite Modified Series, NASCAR Touring event of 2003, twenty-one teams took to the 5/8 mile oval last Saturday at Thompson International Speedway for an open practice session to shake down their entries for this weekend's season opening Icebreaker.

Probably the biggest news was the modified not present, but car owner Billy 'Bear' Calicchio was. Calicchio has announced Eric Beers will be the driver of the Bear Motorsports entry for the entire 2003 season. "It's a great opportunity for both of us," said Bear. "I've watched Eric for the last couple of years and he's not afraid to step on the gas. Eric knows what he needs in a race car and we can do it." Bear will be a regular at Thompson with Bob Webber, Jr. vying for the SK modified Rookie of the Year title and as if that wasn't enough, Frank Vigliarolo will be competing at Riverhead Raceway in yet another Bear Motorsports entry sponsored by Newcom Manufacturing, Major Motion Transport, Chris' Auto, Mangus Precision Pumps and Sunoco Race Fuel. "I'll have a very busy summer," said Bear who added the FMS is the top priority. Tommy Grasso returns as crew chief for the number 14 while Shawn 'Frog' Fitzmaurice will be in charge of the Riverhead entry week in and week out.

Halfway through the 50 lapper Eric was up as high as third and running his race waiting till the last couple of laps to make his move. On lap 47 going out of two with lapped cars underneath Eric held his line and was punted by JR Bertuccio and relegated back to the rear of the field.
